In 2018 the University of Oxford commemorated the centenary of women’s suffrage, and recognised the particular role of the University and the city in that campaign. Both cultivated lively suffrage circles and willing audiences for feminist speakers and activists as well as a variety of suffrage societies. Organisations including the Oxford Women’s Suffrage Society, the Oxford Women Students’ Society for Women’s Suffrage, the Women’s Social and Political Union and the Men's Political Union for Women’s Enfranchisement attracted campaigners from a range of social and political backgrounds, and sustained the women’s suffrage demand for more than fifty years.
